How to explain technical terminology of information technology effectively in a presentation-Chapter1 introduction

1. Statement of the problem and the rationale of the study

In recent years, the teaching of foreign language in Vietnam has seen a remarkable change in methodology, according to CLT, new approach to language teaching adopted. This approach represents a fundamental shift in the teaching- learning process from structure mastery to communicative competence. Accordingly, learners’ ability to communicate becomes its first priority. Never has speaking skill been paid so much attention to. Therefore, for the past few years, presentation skill has been incorporated into speaking syllabus for students of Information Technology University. Each term, students may be asked to give several presentations on different topics. Its aim is to get students used to conducting direct communication, which serves as a fundamental skill not only in university studying but in real life as well. However, a large proportion of students meet with a lot of difficulties when using language effectively in a presentation as well as ways to clarify information technology terms.
It is for this that I would like to get an insight into the theme. I do hope that with a full coverage of aspects relevant to using language to clarify an information technology term, students will no longer find explaining an technical terminology of information technology in a presentation a challenge.

2. Aims of the study

In fact, presentation is a necessary skill in English acquisition. However, it is not easy for information technology students to present technical terminology in their presentation. Thus, this study may be a source for students to consult. Its main objectives are as follow:
- Provide general ideas of using language to have an effective presentation as well as how to use language to explain special terms.
- Introduce some techniques in clarifying information technology terms when information technology students make a presentation.

3. Methods of the study

In conducting this study I have employed an array of methods. They are as follows:
- First, I consult my respective teachers and my dear friends for useful information.
- Besides, experience accumulated during my studying in the university is also made good use of to develop the theme.
- Last but not least, quite a few theme- related books are consulted for the theoretical background. And previous studies make information technology easier for me to complete my study.

4. Scope of the study

Within the limited of an assignment, my study only introduces some notes of using language to have an effective presentation in general and to clarify technical terminology of information technology in particular. It also gives some basic guidelines on explaining these terminologies for information technology students when making a presentation.

5. Design of the study

The study is divided into 6 chapters as followed.
Chapter 1: Introduction consists of the reasons for choosing the topic, objectives of the study, methods of the study, scope of the study, and design of the study.
Chapter 2: Literature review covers the literature review of the study, which is the theory related to using language in a presentation and information technology terms.
Chapter 3: Methodology presents statistics on the real situations of students in Information Technology University when they explain a technical terminology of information technology in a presentation.
Chapter 4: Findings and discussions analyze the facts and figures to show how students in Information Technology University explain a technical terminology of information technology in a presentation.
Chapter 5: Implications and recommendations provide a guideline on how to present a technical terminology of information technology in a presentation in the most effective way.
Chapter 6: Conclusion summarizes the main issue of the study and put forward some recommendation for future study.
